What to Do (& What to Avoid) Before and After Laser Treatment

One of the most popular and versatile services we offer is laser skin treatment with the Aerolase Neo Elite® system. With this laser, we can treat 36 different medical and cosmetic concerns, from signs of aging and skin texture to scarring and excess hair.

Here, the board-certified physicians at PureLee Redefined, Dr. Kenya Lee and Dr. Marvin Lee, guide you through the essential steps to prepare for and recover from your laser treatment for the best possible results.

What to do before a laser treatment

Before your Aerolase laser treatment, it’s crucial to prepare your skin properly to promote a speedy recovery, minimize potential side effects, and see your results faster. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment. Hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments, helping to promote better outcomes and faster healing.
  • Stop certain medications: After reviewing your medical history and the medications you take, we may ask you to pause certain medications or supplements if they increase your skin’s sensitivity to light.
  • Cleanse your skin: Arrive at your appointment with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, or other products so the laser penetrates the skin more effectively. We suggest you use a gentle cleanser and avoid harsh scrubbing to prevent irritation.

“I was initially drawn to their practice because of the amazing reviews and they did not disappoint! Dr. Marvin Lee was informative and during my botox and aerolase treatments. He eased my anxiety as this was my first time receiving these treatments! He was so kind! The atmosphere is clean and beautiful!”

What to avoid before a laser treatment

To ensure your skin is in the best condition for your laser treatment, avoid the following:

  • UV exposure: Limit sun and UV exposure at least two weeks before your treatment. Sunburned or newly tanned skin has an increased risk of side effects and irritation. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat if you must be outdoors, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Skincare products with retinoids or glycolic acid: These active ingredients can make your skin more sensitive, so you’ll need to remove them from your skincare regimen at least one week before your treatment to avoid over-treating your skin. This includes over-the-counter retinol products and prescription retinoids like tretinoin.
  • Exfoliating treatments: Skip any deep exfoliating treatments like chemical peels at least one week before your laser session. These treatments can make your skin more vulnerable.
  • Waxing, plucking, or electrolysis: Whether you are getting laser hair removal or a skin rejuvenation treatment, avoid these hair removal methods in the treatment area for at least two weeks before your appointment. During laser hair removal, the pigment in your hair follicle attracts the laser energy. The laser prevents future hair growth by damaging the follicle, so removing the follicle with these methods would render the treatment entirely ineffective. They can also increase sensitivity if performed before a laser rejuvenation treatment.
  • Alcohol and smoking: Alcohol can increase the risk of bruising, while smoking can slow down the healing process, which could compromise the overall results. Both can dehydrate your skin and interfere with your healing process.

“Amazing first visit experience! I was greeted with a warm smile by staff upon entering the office. The office is clean and aesthetically pleasing. Dr. Marvin Lee was punctual and informative. In a world of quick 2 minute appointments in offices where you feel like a number, this was not that! He took time to discuss my concerns and came up with a treatment plan. I look forward to returning!”

How to care for your skin after a laser treatment

Post-treatment care is just as important as pre-procedure prep. Here’s what you should do:

  • Apply sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV rays, and reapply as directed. Sun exposure can cause unwanted pigmentation changes and other complications post-laser treatment, in addition to accelerating the aging process.
  • Keep your skin moisturized: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and ceramides to help restore the skin barrier and soothe your skin.
  • Use cool compresses: Depending on the details of your laser treatment, you may experience mild redness or swelling; applying cool compresses can help reduce discomfort and inflammation, which is temporary and quickly resolves on its own.

What to avoid after your laser treatment

We provide detailed, easy-to-follow aftercare instructions based on the type of treatment you receive. Here are general guidelines on what to avoid post-treatment:

  • Strenuous activities: Sweating can irritate treated skin, so we ask that you avoid activities or exercise that cause excessive sweating for at least 48 hours post-treatment.
  • Harsh skincare products: Avoid using exfoliants, retinoids, or products containing alcohol for at least one week post-treatment. These products can be irritating and slow down the healing process.
  • High temperatures: Heat can exacerbate redness and swelling, so refrain from taking hot baths, showers, or using saunas for at least 48 hours.
  • Picking or scratching: It’s very important that you do not pick or scratch at any treated areas, which can lead to scarring and infection. Let any minor crusting or peeling resolve on its own.
  • Facial treatments: Your skin needs time to heal and recover fully, so plan other facial treatments, such as Exion RF microneedling at least two weeks after your laser treatment or as directed.
