Kybella® vs. CoolSculpting®: Which is More Effective to Get Rid of a Double Chin

As we age, many of us tend to develop extra fat deposits beneath the chin, the dreaded double chin. You may want to have your double chin removed for aesthetic reasons.

Drs. Kenya Lee and Marvin Lee at Purelee Redefined are highly experienced physicians who are dedicated to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals. Your treatments will be delivered in a  safe, comfortable, and supportive environment.

Kybella® and CoolSculpting® are potential solutions for treating double chins. These non-invasive procedures eliminate your excess fat cells, allowing you to have a smooth, firm, youthful appearing chin.

Why does a double chin form?

A double chin, also known as “submental fullness,” is a layer of fat under your chin that hangs down or sags beneath your chin. It can be caused by weight gain, loss of skin elasticity that occurs with aging, or from genetics.

How can I eliminate a double chin?

There are a number of treatments that will improve the appearance of your double chin, including exercise, dietary changes, surgery, liposuction, cryolipolysis, and mesotherapy. Kybella is a form of mesotherapy that uses injections of deoxycholic acid, a fat-dissolving chemical to attack the extra fat cells and break them down. CoolSculpting is a type of cryolipolysis that freezes your fat cells, programming them to be eliminated in a controlled manner by the body’s immune and lymphatic systems.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an easy, safe, noninvasive procedure that removes your double chin through a series of injections of deoxycholic acid. This naturally occurring chemical is produced by your liver and breaks down fat. Kybella removes your double chin by destroying the walls of the fat cells, causing the cells to die and be reabsorbed by your body.

What is Kybella treatment like?

Before completing the Kybella treatment, your specialist ensures that you are comfortable and understand the procedure. You will receive a numbing topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the treatment. Through a series of small injections, your provider inserts the Kybella into your double chin, completing the entire treatment in about 15 to 20 minutes.

You likely will need to have a few treatments of Kybella to achieve the results you desire, with about a month in between each appointment. After your treatments, you may experience minor side effects such as bruising, tenderness, or numbness in the areas that were injected, but there is no downtime needed after the procedure. Once all your treatments are complete, you will see your final results in a few weeks.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a noninvasive fat removal technique that delivers carefully targeting cooling to your double chin. This freezes your fat cells, causing them to be eliminated from the body through your lymphatic system.

What is CoolSculpting treatment like?

The CoolSculpting treatment starts with your provider applying pre-treatment wipe then a gel pad to your skin that will protect it during the CoolSculpting procedure. Then we use a special cooling device that also contains temperature sensing thermistors and suction to target the fat cells as it rests on the skin. After this has been completed, we perform a post-treatment massage the treated skin to maximize the effectiveness of the procedure.

During the CoolSculpting procedure, you may feel some sensations such as tingling, pulling, and stinging, but these should subside once the treatment is complete. You may experience mild swelling, aching, or tenderness after the procedure. You shouldn’t have any downtime, and you’ll see full results within 6 weeks to a few months.

Kybella vs. CoolSculpting: Which is more effective?

Kybella and CoolSculpting are great treatment options for removing your double chin. They are both minimally invasive to non-invasive procedures that are performed in our office with little to no downtime and mild side effects.

Kybella treatment is only approved for use on double chins, but CoolSculpting is approved for use on nine target areas, including the abdomen, thighs, arms, and back. So if you have more areas you want to have treated in addition to your double chin, CoolSculpting might an appropriate choice for you. At Purelee Redefined we answer all your Kybella and CoolSculpting questions and help you determine if one of these is the right treatment for you.
