What is pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB)?
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), commonly known as “ingrown hairs” or “razor bumps,” is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by hair removal (i.e. shaving or waxing). Individuals with curly hair are predisposed to experiencing PFB, as the curvature of the hair allows for downward penetration into the skin as the hair grows, and the concern affects 83% of black men to some degree. The reaction caused by the ingrown hair (a foreign body) leads to itching and the development of papules and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In some cases, thick raised scars called keloids may develop, leaving significant scarring. PFB is particularly prevalent among military members due to strict grooming standards—though this condition can affect the face, neck, and any area where post-pubertal secondary hair is removed for both men and women.

What should I expect during Aerolase® PFB laser treatment?
Before treatment begins, Dr. Kenya Lee or Dr. Marvin Lee will examine your skin and review your medical history to ensure PFB laser treatment is right for you.
During your treatment, your surgeon will use the Aerolase wand to move over the treatment area, precisely delivering laser energy to target PFB papules, hyperpigmentation and terminate the underlying hair follicle. Most patients report a warming sensation on the skin that is comfortable and well tolerated.
What happens after Aerolase® PFB laser treatment?
Some patients experience temporary redness which typically resolves within a few hours. As each hair follicle is permanently disabled, you’ll notice a gradual decrease in hair growth, PFB papules and lesions, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—most patients see notable PFB improvement within a few weeks of the initial treatment. You may return to your normal activities immediately after treatment, though you should carefully follow all aftercare instructions—including applying sun protection—to speed healing and encourage optimal results.
How many Aerolase® PFB laser treatments will I need?
